New step – EVS in Croatia

After 2 months in Lithuania, it was time to move again. Only in one day I managed to apply for an EVS project in Croatia, get accepted and buy a flight ticket. After three days I stepped into my new home in Latinovac, a little village in the Eastern Croatia. I like when things go so spontaneously. Planning is not for me.

With a bunch of people from Portugal, Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia and Bosnia, my life now spins around an eco center in Latinovac. Volunteers are staying with the local people. I’m lucky to live with a guy who has a lot of ducks, chickens, gooses, swans, turkeys and many other kind of birds that usually wake me up at 5 a.m. I don’t mind them as I fell asleep soon anyway. The house I’m staying is next to the forest with a lake for the birds. It’s about 15 min. walk from the eco center, so usually I take bicycle.

Eco center is promoting an idea of ecological and sustainable living. I’m interested in this kind of life since I was WWOOF’ing in Portugal last year. So we assort garbage, make a compost, use a solar power and three bowls to wash dishes instead of leaking hundreds of litres of water from the tap. Our diet is mostly vegetarian as it waste less resources, not as because people here are vegetarians. It might sound exotic, but I think to live responsibly in these times of consumerism is the right thing to do.

I came on the right time, because we had a party in the community house on the weekend with all the villagers, traditional Portuguese and Croatian dishes, harmonica music and dances. We also learned some drumming – so my first days were quite entertaining.

But not everything is about fun. We also help the villagers if needed and prepare some souvenirs for upcoming festival on July. There are daily duties that contains helping in the kitchen, watering the plants and cleaning the floor. But even the most boring work is easy to handle when you are surrounded by people.

It’s more than a week now since I’m here and I feel quite relaxed and integrated. All my free time I spend with other volunteers, sometimes we go for a walk, watch a movie or just hang around the eco center. I was a bit nervous before coming to Croatia – a new beginning is always scary, but looks like the things are going smooth. Time is passing slowly, days filled with good emotions – summertime and the leaving is easy!
